Motion Control – Brushless Mini-Motor

Motion Control – Vaughan, Ontario, Canada – maxon has expanded its ECX PRIME brushless DC motor family with the ECX PRIME 22, a 22 mm diameter motor designed for applications requiring high torque, high speed, and compact integration. It targetsmotion control precision-driven systems that require stable performance under varying loads.
Key Features
22mm diameter, high-torque, high-speed 4-pole BLDC motor designed for compact, lightweight applications that demand both rapid acceleration and consistent torque output within a limited footprint.
Performance
- Nominal Torque: Increases up to 69.1 mNm
- Speed: Operation up to 30,000 rpm
- Power Range: 1.6W to 100W
- Inertia: 11.5 gcm² (low inertia for dynamic response)
Four-Pole Design for Torque Density
The motor uses a four-pole rotor design to increase torque density compared to two-pole alternatives. This supports a more rigid speed-torque characteristic, allowing the motor to maintain speed stability as load conditions vary. This behavior is beneficial in motion control, robotics, handheld devices, and precision instrumentation, where speed consistency directly impacts system performance.
Ironless Winding for Smooth Motion
An ironless winding eliminates cogging torque, enabling smooth rotation with reduced torque ripple and vibration. This improves motion control accuracy in sensitive applications. The design also reduces electrical losses and heat generation, supporting efficient operation and extended service life. Low rotor inertia further enhances dynamic response, enabling fast acceleration and deceleration.
Configurable Platform
The ECX PRIME 22 is configurable to meet application-specific requirements, including winding options, sensor integration, and mechanical interfaces.
Variants are available for demanding environments, including sterilizable versions for medical use and options with ceramic bearings for cleanroom or vacuum conditions. The motor weighs approximately 153 g, making it suitable for compact and weight-sensitive systems.
Application Focus
- The ECX PRIME 22 is suited for:
- Robotics and end-of-arm tooling
- Optical and inspection systems
- Surgical and handheld medical devices
- Laboratory and analytical equipment
