Mattituck, NY — Ultra Motion supplied the motion control linrear actuator used in shifting the Volkswagen Touareg SUV that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. The VW Touareg SUV had to be able to shift into forward, reverse, and park. To win the DARPA Grand Challenge an unmanned vehicle had to navigate a twisting course through 132 miles of desert, go around rocks and boulders, cross ditches and berms, go through an underpass, avoid rock walls and sharp dropoffs, and other obstacles. The VW Touareg SUV completed the 132 miles in the winning time of 6 hours and 53 minutes for an average speed of 19.4 mph.

Volkswagen Group’s Electronic Research Laboratory (ERL) selected an 8 in. stroke Ultra Motion “Digit” motion control linear actuator with an Acme .0833 in/rev. lead screw, reed switches, precision linear potentiometer, large base rod bearing clevis, and nose rod clevis to do the shifting .
