Koford Engineering LLC has introduced a new line of high power compact high efficiency sensorless motion control drives for operation for 12 to 52 volt applications, with current up to 20 amps. These 960 watt drives have efficiency up to 99% and a PWM frequency of 56k for cool motor operation. These drives can operate low inductance slotless motors without requiring any external inductance. Open loop, and digital closed loop versions are available. Analog, digital. RC PWM speed comm and manual speed pot inputs are offered. Gearbox efficiencies are up to 94%. The motors are available in 2 and 4 pole designs and with hall sensors or sensorless with power outputs 10 to 620 watts, motor speeds from 3,600 up to 30,000 rpm, and motor efficiencies up to 89%. Mechanical time constants are as low as 4ms.

They feature a slotless design which eliminates cog and allows for precise positioning compared to conventional toothed motors. Typically slotless motors in this size are only available with 2 poles. The 4 pole configuration doubles the resolution for hall feedback speed control, improving performance. These motors are engineered to provide a straight line speed torque relationship under all conditions.

Steinmeyer, Inc. announced a new motion control, precision, multi-axis air bearing gantry system. This motion system consists of an XY stage utilizing air bearings plus a conventional ball screw driven Z table. It is ideal wherever there is a need for ultra high precision and outstanding dynamic performance. These stages (which may be completely customized) achieve the following standard XY specifications: travel is 600 mm X 600 mm, positional accuracy is 10 microns, positioning repeatability is +/- 1 micron, straightness and flatness is 1 micron. Both X and Y stages are driven by ironless, electrodynamic linear motors with maximum acceleration of 10 m/s² and velocity of 1000 mm/s. Ultra Motion supplied the motion control actuator used in shifting the Volkswagen Touareg SUV that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. The VW Touareg SUV had to be able to shift into forward, reverse, and park. To win the DARPA Grand Challenge an unmanned vehicle had to navigate a twisting course through 132 miles of desert, go around rocks and boulders, cross ditches and berms, go through an underpass, avoid rock walls and sharp dropoffs, and other obstacles. The VW Touareg SUV completed the 132 miles in the winning time of 6 hours and 53 minutes for an average speed of 19.4 mph.
