Midwest Motion Products of Watertown, Minnesota, is pleased to announce the release of a new motion control DC Gear Motor, the Model No. MMP-D40-675A-12V GP81-019. Accepting any 12 Volt DC source, including battery power, this robust Gear Motor measures just 4.0” (max) Diameter, by 11.5” long, and has a keyed output shaft of 1 9mm diameter by 40mm long. Easy mounting is accomplished with 4 “facemount” M 6 threaded holes, equally spaced on a 65mm Dia. B.C. The output of this reversible gearmotor is rated for 385 IN LBS continuous torque, at 103 RPM, and 1065 IN LBS Peak. Despite its compact size, and weight of approximately 12 pounds, it ’s an efficient design, requiring just 57 Amps at 12 Volts DC to generate its Full Load Torque. That translates into long life battery charge, relative to the power available, very LOW NOISE operation, and lower cost drive electronics. The bearing rails are rolled 304 stainless with an internal bearing race. Each three bearing slider unit is 80 mm (3.15 inches) long. Each 440C stainless steel ball bearing roller is lubricated for life, features 2RS seals, and can be washed down. The slider’s center bearing is mounted on a eccentric shaft for adjusting the preload. The cross section of the compact bearing and slider is only 26 mm x .22 mm (1.02 in. x .866 in.). “Ultra Motion Shifts the DARPA Grand Challenge Winner Into High Gear!
Ultra Motion supplied the motion control actuator used in shifting the Volkswagen Touareg SUV that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. The VW Touareg SUV had to be able to shift into forward, reverse, and park. To win the DARPA Grand Challenge an unmanned vehicle had to navigate a twisting course through 132 miles of desert, go around rocks and boulders, cross ditches and berms, go through an underpass, avoid rock walls and sharp dropoffs, and other obstacles. The VW Touareg SUV completed the 132 miles in the winning time of 6 hours and 53 minutes for an average speed of 19.4 mph.
